EKAW (European Knowledge Acquisition Workshop) was established in 1987 as the European analogue to the successful KAW series in North America.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, EKAW helped define the key venues for research in Knowledge-Based Systems, focusing particularly on the computational representation of knowledge and human expert behavior.
Evolving from a workshop, EKAW became an annual conference in 2000, formally taking the title of International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management while preserving the original acronym. Today, EKAW and its counterpart, K-CAP, define the two main global forums for this field. The EKAW community is characterized by a "holistic" approach to knowledge engineering, informed by technology as well as the cognitive and social sciences, and emphasizes the pursuit of reusable patterns in problem solving.
Over 30 years after its first edition, EKAW continues to demonstrate the vitality and robust state of health of this critical area of research.
